Over the past few years there has been an intense interest in the development of an holistic approach to animal production. This means developing a full herd health programme for a specific herd rather than focusing on a single component such as the vaccination programme. A herd health programme integrates specialised veterinary knowledge with the stock farmer's knowledge of climate, the production cycle of the herd and pasture management of the specific farm.
Afrivet Business Management, as part of its mission to provide quality products and service. has taken the initiative in assisting the South African farmer in the development of a basic herd plan. Called the , it will help the farmer to focus on the specific health needs created by the animals' production cycle as well as the climatic environmental cycle in the area of the farmer. The aim is not to replace veterinarians but rather to work with them to help the farmer establish a specific programme for his animals and his farm. The foundations for good animal health and optimal production are laid by good planning and the implementation of specific management actions at the right time.
It is an integrated management system available to farmers from Afrivet and consists of an initial analysis through consultation with Afrivet agents, followed by supportive advice from the veterinarians of Afrivet. Management plans are available for beef cattle and sheep. The initial analysis system is divided into four parts of the production cycle as follows:
PERIOD 1: CALVING/LAMBING AND PREPARATION FOR BREEDING
PERIOD 2: BREEDING AND PRE-WEANING GROWTH OF CALVES/LAMBS
PERIOD 3: PREGNANCY DIAGNOSIS AND WEANING OF CALVES/LAMBS
PERIOD 4: DRY COW/EWE MANAGEMENT AND PREPARATION FOR CALVING/LAMBING
Thus all management, vaccination and parasite control measures required for the season are planned for each quarter and useful products for each procedure are detailed.
